For computer systems, all the different naming are supposed to be incremental by 1024 times. 1024 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte; 1024 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte.. and so on. But the digital storage companies decided that they could increase their profit by fooling people.. by incrementing only 1000 times instead of 1024. So, for them, 1 Megabyte is only 1000 Kilobyte, 1 Terabyte is only 1000 Gigabyte, not 1024.
This is where the 627.89 Mb comes from..
627.89 x 1000 = 627890 Kb
627890 x 1000 = 627890000 b
now, keep dividing by 1024, because the computer systems work on 1024; not the dumb 1000 imposed by the greedy fucks..
627890000 ÷ 1024 = 613173.8 KB
613173.8 ÷ 1024 = 598.8 MB
and that's why the file shows 598.8 MB instead of 628

Thanks! I guess it is the 'MB' vs 'Mb'. Why do they confuse us even more than needed. Funny thing is the 720p file is more than 100 MB bigger on the site lol.
No no, it's not that. The difference between MB & Mb is a whole another issue. It's another messy confusion!
b is supposed to be for 'bit' & B is supposed to be for 'byte. So, MB is Megabyte & Mb is Megabit. 1 byte = 8 bit. So, the difference between b & B is always 8 times, no matter the denomination.
Network provider companies do this regularly.. they advertise the internet speed as 60 Mbps, 80 Mbps, 100 Mbps.. but in reality it's 7.5 MBps, 10 MBps, 12.5 MBps.. obtained with simply diving by 8.
Confusion all around! In our modern society, you have to be knowledgeable about everything.. not in depth but at least a faint idea. Otherwise, you're bound to fall into scams.
That's because of shitty re-encoding of the video files. If you notice the mediainfo of these scaled-down versions of files, you will notice that they are always encoded with fixed bitrate.
The original 4k or 1080p file is probably processed by professionals who know how to use proper optimizations. Then they hand over the files to the website-handing team who put the files into automatic re-encoding processors.. where they always use fixed bitrate; which means the filesize remains relatively same according to video length. But since the original file is encoded with optimizations, it remains relatively lower size.
This could very well be solved if they simply re-encode the files with CRF.. but I guess they don't care.
