Here's an old transcript of a China Barbie interview I found @ SoHood.com
I spoke with performer/director China Barbie, who Tuesday was sued by Mattel lawyers in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The manufacturer of the blonde, blue-eyed doll Barbie claims the performer made a "bad faith attempt to profit from Mattel's Barbie trademarks."
The New York city based model, who is half Jamaican and half Chinese-American, says "I am the antithesis of the blonde, blue-eyed girl. It's ridiculous that Mattel is suing me!"
So Hood Magazine: How did you get the name China Barbie?
China Barbie: I first had the name Akari but I changed it when I came across a girl named Boriqua Barbie in my agent's office and I liked the sound. Being part Chinese, I toyed with calling myself China Barbie and then it stuck. Especially when a bigger agent in L.A., Jim South, told me to keep the name cause my top is heavy (naturally) and my waist is small like a Barbie doll.
How did you get into the business?
My gal pal and I had corporate jobs and on our lunch hour we used to hang out at this sex shop called, The Lion's Den. Neal, the manager, also had his own fetish line; so he introduced me to Heather Hunter and her manager, Dave to show he was legit and then I started from there doing fetish videos. Then Asian porn star, Annabel Chong, convinced me to fly to L.A. where I would have a bigger name and where the money would be a lot better.
Who was the first guy you had sex on camera with?
TT Boy. Jim South set the whole thing up and I was doing a scene the first day I met him. I didn't want to work with him or do any kind of scene, at first, but then he told me in some weird way that he was not white, but Puerto Rican and then I changed my mind and we did the scene later that day. And I must say he's one of the top best fuckers in the biz. He can do 8 scenes a day, literally speaking.
How did you feel after doing your first scene on film?
I felt numb. I actually made myself not think about it cause the amount of money on the check was so good that I couldn't start thinking morally. I just blanked out all feelings. the way most girls do when you stop fantasizing about being a porn star and start doing it. It's weird. You be like, "Oh no, did I really just do that".
How long have you been in the Adult Entertainment Industry?
I started in 2000 and was in and out of the business since then til 2002 when I launched my website and began directing.
Speaking of your site, talk about Mattel and why you are being sued.
(smiles) I am the antithesis of the blonde, blue-eyed girl. It's ridiculous that Mattel is suing me!
When did you first receive the message from Mattel that they were planning to sue your website?
I didn't get contacted by Mattel or the court. I was on MySpace one day wondering why I was getting all these friend requests , then I first learned of the suit when a friend called to tell me about it.
You mean, it was on the news and your friend saw it before you?
Yeah that's what happened. I wonder why Mattel is so selective in suing me, when there are dozens of Barbies on the web, and on sites like One Model Place and Model Mayhem.
The name 'Barbie' appears a lot in Adult Industry related topics on a google search. There are hundreds of results linking it to pornstars, porn movie titles and sex products yet it seems Mattel has singled you out ...
It's so ridiculous. I've always been under the radar. I only did a few movies and then I left the business. Why me out of the 50 or so girls out there named Barbie, and why after six years?
Is there anything that you can reveal on how you plan to handle this legally?
I'm overwhelmed by this suit. I'm in no position to fight Mattel. But you can see from my website that I absolutely don't trade on the name or image of Mattel's 'Barbie'. I don't use the illustrations, I don't even use the font. I was willing to talk with them and even make changes to avoid a legal battle, but they demanded I transfer her domain to them and cede whatever money I made from my name to them, in addition to $100,000.
On a lighter note let's change up the mood of this interview. Are you close with your fans?
Yes even though I retired from movies Im still very close to my fans. I reply to emails and send them regular pictures of me and Im always posting my actions in my blog and forums, groups.
Do you have any tips or advice to people who want to work in the industry?
Make sure its your decision and make sure you play safe and work with professional productions.
And the last question; We all want to know how you see yourself in the future. Any new plans beyond directing?
Im not sure yet for now with this lawsuit going on but for now Im just living in the moment and enjoying life.
Thank you
Thanks so much for the interview I hope it has given you a better insight to my thoughts and life.
